(Now full) This six-week series is for those looking to develop more focus and follow-through on their song ideas. This is a primary challenge for songwriters! Doors open at 7pm and music will begin at 730. Simon Gray plays in between Diane & Mariee. All ages, seating is limited and first come first served.
Mariee Siou has been a fixture in the Neo-folk scene since her 2007 debut "Faces in the Rocks"—now acclaimed as a cult classic in the indie music world. She is revered for her delicate finger picking and poetic mysticism, often drawing, as from the ether, immense feeling through a voice of soft potency and otherworldly wordsmithing. She is known as a healing singer and as being a visionary artist, channeling and transmitting medicinal qualities through her music. Mariee Siou has extensively toured Europe and the US, and opened for acclaimed artists like Mazzy Star, Buffy St. Marie, Bert Jansch, Brightblack Morning Light, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, and Joanna Newsom. In 2021 she played Le Guess Who? In Utrecht, Netherlands, at the invitation of Phil Elverum of The Microphones/Mt. Eerie, and she continues to tour the US and Europe.
Diane Cluck is a singer-songwriter who leans on classical piano training in approaching guitar, dance as an inspiration for rediscovering piano, and voice as a rhythm instrument and paintbrush. She's currently at work on her ninth record, House Tears, for release in 2023. “Bell-clear and hotly austere, her lithe, dynamic voice hasn’t much kin. Categorizing her as folk is simplistic. (Cluck) emanates something humble but mythic. Appalachia or ancient Athens?” – Time Out New York
Simon Gray is a multi-instrumentalist who got his start busking on the streets of Las Vegas. Over the years, he has played for passersby from Cadiz to San Miguel, New Orleans to Jaffa, Auckland to Kalalau. He was a founding member of Olympia, WA stoner-metal trio Skeeter, Oakland, CA artist collective The Fungal Jungle Big Band, Jawbone Flats, OR reggae ensemble The Six Percenters, as well as Keene, NH area bands Blue Motel, Princess Kikou, and The Ghost of Route 10. Simon also produced the score for several film projects, including indie-horror flick "The Production", documentaries "Davers" and "Dreams of White Mountain", and the microseries "Chronicles of Harambe".
Show is by donation / $20 suggested / all welcome, no one turned away. Opening set from Miss Miranda, solo project of Austin-based folk singer/songwriter Miranda Haney. With equal parts humor, heart, and candor, Miranda's songs are stories woven through fingerpicked patterns and unlabored vocals, best enjoyed alongside a good cup of coffee. Her 2021 single 'Daniel' was named Song of the Day by KUTX. She's currently working on a debut EP, Empty Afternoon, with indie rock band Other Vessels.
6pm doors, 7pm show

3:30pm, 4-6pm show with joy burklund to open. $20 suggested, all welcome / no one turned away.
joy burklund (she/they) is a songstress, singer, and artist living in Lenapehoking, also known as Philadelphia. Her musical roots are grounded in choral singing, musical theater, indie-punk, diva pop, and folk lineages. After 15 years as a theater artist and performer, joy returned to songwriting and singing in 2022 for the first time since performing with her garage punk band in high school. Her songs are emotionally-driven, full-heartedly romantic, transgender, synesthetic spinnings written for the beautifully-gendered freaks in this world, and those who love them. Song is a potent medium for processing emotion, conveying information, and sharing ideas. Now is a wonderful time to bring what you have to the art form! This live, twelve-part workshop with Diane Cluck introduces skills and creative approaches to the art of songwriting. The series will include craft talks, writing prompts and group exercises in an encouraging environment. We’ll learn ways to uncover, generate, and organize song material as part of a personal songwriting practice.
You’re most welcome with your current level of skill. Past workshops have included those who are new to songwriting, those returning after a hiatus, and experienced songwriters looking to refresh their approach. These mixed-level groups have shown to be beneficial for everyone. Previous experience in singing, songwriting, or playing an instrument isn’t required.
Weekly topics include building a personal practice, vocal warm-ups and exploration, song structure, lyrical content, phrasing, accompaniment, creative approaches to harmony & melody, quick-write exercises, song shares, and giving and receiving supportive feedback. We’ll also touch on songwriting-adjacent topics such as the basics of home recording.
Diane’s personal practice and approach to facilitation also includes focus on the energetics involved in making music. Singing and songwriting are powerful and can initiate significant personal and interpersonal change over time. In workshop we give time to discussing personal obstacles and breakthroughs, as well as how to stay engaged and find and cultivate musical community.
