I ended up having so much to say...bizness & healthcare...D.I.O.-style ( do it ourselves...D.I.Y. sounds lonesome to me, lately... ) Song-of-the-Week is 94% funded since this interview posted. 'Feeling buoyed by y'all ! (Read interview) Comments: Maggie Denman 1/27/12: finally able to contribute! The organizers of Alter Space, a brand new art gallery / project space have invited me out for a show in San Francisco in support of Song-of-the-Week. This brings the project to 92% funded. Thank you, Kevin and Koak ! Of the two shows i'll be playing in San Francisco in late June, only the one at Alter Space will be public. Both show dates will be announced as they're determined.
First house show subscription !
I am excited to announce that some folks in San Francisco have subscribed at the house show level ! 'Looks like I'll be making a west coast trip in the last week of June to coincide with Pride. Thank you for this tremendous support !I can play a show in your town / school / venue in support of Song-of-the-Week. Please read the $1,000 level subscription details to the right and contact me if you have interest or questions ! Comments: Charlotte Greene 1/23/12: beautiful entry. thank you for sharing so much about yourself, as always. you electrify so many people, in various ways i am sure. i look forward to your arrival in san francisco! Erin Day 1/23/12: ladeeda...just waiting on my tax return. it comes in two days. or a day and a half. so count my donation in; i plan on asking you to compose a song about education, so however much the composition request is. Annie Armadillus 1/23/12: Congratulations on your project! Just subscribed 10 bucks, wish I could give more. Give them hell. "I'm doing a project."
I've been in the studio lately, organizing instruments & recording equipment in preparation for Song-of-the-Week.I've picked up working on the copper pipe instrument I started with my father last year. It's meant to be an improved version of the one I used to play in live shows and recordings ( "auction" from diane cluck, "love me if ye do" from Countless Times ). I'd built the original for a high school physics project; my dad helped me design and build that one, too. Through playing it I discovered that the center of each pipe where it gives the most 'ring' was difficult to reach with mallets. I also discovered that it wasn't tuned very well. I ended up giving the original instrument away to a housemate's father's girlfriend during one of my many Brooklyn move-outs. My father generously shared his time and talents with me last winter in his basement workshop. Our combined effort on this new, improved instrument blended our similarly quirky yet practical approaches to design, and made use of his well-maintained storage of odds and ends ( the original instrument involved oxygen-tubing from my grandmother's stay in the hospital ). I enjoyed keeping pace with his engineer's mind as we encountered various challenges along the way. ( Thanks, Dad ! ) On a recent visit to my parents' house, I found this picture of me, below, around age four. Even then, I loved being involved in 'projects'--my father's or my own. I can still remember how often I'd tell someone, "I'm doing a project", meaning 'not now / leave me alone / yes, I'm actually doing something / this is important !' This past December, as I was looking through their rag hamper, I came across the Penn State shirt my father is wearing in the photo below. It's the one I'm now wearing in the series above. I feel, lately, that I'm not so much changing as I am uncovering / rediscovering who I have always enjoyed being. ![]() Comments: Minerva Rios 1/16/12: ♥ Anya Dayneko 1/16/12: JOY! so brrrrry much looking forward to seeing you in bklyn Feb 6! Stephanie AnnaMay Finegan 1/16/12: How excited are you!! Brilliant! Debbie 1/16/12: I love this post, love the site! Timothy James Wright 1/16/12: This makes me smile... steven 1/17/12: aw, i love you. ! Alan Pedder 1/17/12: Loved this. Chris Benesh 1/18/12: guitar + drums + percussion + Diane = great anticipation! Dina Rudeen 1/21/12: Love! Wears the Trousers
Alan Pedder's Wears the Trousers is pretty much my favorite channel for discovering new women in music...most recently, Julia Holter's album "Ekstasis".In this recent interview, Alan asks me the how's and why's of what I've been up to with SOTW and previously. Comments: Bo Becker 1/12/12: I absolutely love this song of the week idea. More thanks ! and a boon from Booooooom.
Many people subscribed today -- thank you ! My thanks go out to folks who've been writing up SOTW on their blogs and various sites, helping me to promote this project. A few weeks into fundraising I'm beginning to feel that the work's getting easier, the momentum is starting to carry itself and the burden is being shared. ( It is shape-shifting, becoming other than a burden. ) Thank you. THANK YOU. SOTW is now 50% funded.Nada of BOOOOOOOM creative community blog featured a mention of the project today. Thanks, y'all ! Comments: joshua lancaster 1/10/12: Its hard to make a comment about such brilliant music (kudos to you for a great review of Diane's contribution to music. Monarcana is probably my favorite as well. Its hard to beat hearing the traffic and phone calls as additional players while diane plays as if she were playing to only you. Diane is my bob dylan. Im extremely grateful for the way she changed my notion of what a song is and can be. Im stoked to hear some new songs! One day I hope that I can be proud enough of just one of my songs to send it Diane's way as a thank you for the lesson her beautiful music provided me. Until then, thank you diane! Tiny Mix Tapes, over the moon
Thank you, Squeo and Tiny Mix Tapes, for your charmingly supportive article on Song-of-the-Week. 89% funded by Wednesday would be amazing ! I'd be over the moon to reach that by January 30th. ( it's a big, full moon tonight--i'll start practicing. help push my booty up over la lune...a bit of snowfall, here, to catch us...
BreakThru Radio interview: audio
Last week I spoke with Maia MacDonald on BreakThru Radio.talking miles-a-minute about music, NYC, kitchen witchery and Song-of-the-Week... ( the technological wonder of removing silence ) Comments: Maurissa 12/24/11: I love her music! Jan. 5th update
We've passed $6000. Twelve people have signed up for original illustrations or custom-written songs. Thank you to everyone who's subscribed so far! thoughts on self-promotion
![]() At this point, I / we have raised over $5,000 towards the $15,000 project goal. For a first-time effort, I believe fundraising ( through subscriptions ) is going fairly well ! With just a few weeks until January 30th, there is still much farther to go. Promoting my work is a new venture for me, and continues to be a huge learning experience. I've relied thus far on my email lists, Facebook, Twitter, live shows and radio appearances for getting the word out. I have lots of people to thank--and don't even know who everyone is--for continuous help in spreading the word. So far I've managed to respond personally to everyone who's subscribed. It's challenging, being all of these things for myself--artist / manager / promoter. Photo above illustrates my well-lit confusion / conflation. Overall, I'm ready to be receiving more help in these areas... to be spending more time in the studio...less time on the computer !... feedback flows in
"I would like to subscribe to the delightful song of the week project and support the continuation of this beautiful music making." -TM "Just wanted to know how much I'm looking forward to this project and to be able to hear new material of one of my favorite artists of all time :) I really hope that you get enough money to fund your idea. And of course I'm hoping that your travels will lead you to Germany maybe next year. I wish you all the best for everything you're planning to do." -TR "cool idea! i wish i could translate the approach to something similar for visual art, but it's a much different animal.. i'm mulling it over though.." -DS "Great project, exciting !" -GR "i am intrigued and excited. i also like your painted dragon." -JJ "Great work!!!! I'm super proud of you!...I think its really empowering...I recently started figuring out how to become a nonprofit in order to try to fund a new project and its been a similarly huge learning experience." -RM "This is a great idea! I can't wait." -ED "Congrats Diane on launching the SOTW. It looks great and must be so exciting and satisfying to send it out into the world." -HT "I love this idea! So so great. I would love to support you in exchange for song love. Can't think of much better way to spend those weird paper dollar things." -LS "I just purchased a month's Song of the Week subscription, which I'm hoping we can set up as a gift for a young songwriter who we're hoping will be excited and inspired by your songs... Thank you! (And thank you for the songs!)" -AG "i just bought a gift subscription ... you sent me a handmade copy of oh vanille many years ago and it's still a very special thing to me. thanks so much, we're both really looking forward to this!" -MS "i'm really happy to be able to contribute, i love your songs and have enjoyed seeing you play, so it's the least i can do, and i'll pass the word along. i'm really looking forward to your songs, and best of luck with gathering subscriptions, it's a wonderful idea." -SR "your music is so amazing. I'm excited to get in on this project somehow." -RS "I just subscribed to your Song-of-the-Week. As much as I would like to keep the subscription for myself, I want to give it to my friend ... She and I saw you perform at the Sycamore in Brooklyn, and I know this will mean a lot to her!" -LW "great to hear about this D.I.Y. endeavor....yey! this is exciting and inspiring...." -JG "I think this is such a good idea. I'm hoping to make an album next year and keep getting put off by how difficult it is so wish you luck!!!" -PB "I had nice feelings seeing your web page congratulations ! Hey, if I understood well, you're trying to get enough funding to be able to center yourself on songcrafting for some months and you will then send the song - one each week - that you would produce at that moment I like that idea ! Much better than 'buying' songs already made. I feel the pace is nice, receiving just a song each 7 days It's like a little meeting and discovering around a creation - one by one : ) I can imagine that if I like the song, I kinda live with it for a week, and the a new one comes" -PD "YeaaaaaaaaaAxxxxxxxxx." -DS
